Celebrity Dating Expectations

Sunday June 3, 2007

Paula Abdul, according to the Starpulse News Blog, stopped dating for a full year because she "found it impossible to live up to her cheerful public image".

I can't help but wonder if Paula's reasoning for not dating for so long was something more than her potential date's expectation she was a happy person. Sure, when starting a conversation with a stranger I don't advise talking about negative or potentially volatile topics at first, but once you've shared three or four dates with someone it is perfectly acceptable to discuss the things that bother you.

What other reasons could Paula have had? Perhaps she hadn't examined how she was affecting the outcome of her dating experiences by sharing too much too soon. Maybe Ms. Abdul expected her early dates to provide the kind of comfort she could have sought in a long-term friend instead. Or perhaps she was working through a difficult time in her life, and wasn't in the right headspace to start dating again.
