Dating Site Yahoo! Cuts Convicted Manslaughterer From Its Database

Sunday July 29, 2007

A man convicted of killing his wife and out on bail pending appeals posted a dating site profile at Yahoo! Personals recently, according to Recordnet. Once Yahoo! heard of the man's dating site profile, they erased it promptly.

The man's background was discovered by a woman who googled him after she chatted with him briefly through the dating site's email system and then reported him to the website.

What I found the most interesting in this story was that the man was out on bail after being convicted of a horrible crime - and not that he was using an online dating site - although the article linked to above along wtih several other blog postings on the topic seem to have slid over this important piece of information.

Perhaps the woman in question would have felt safer using a dating site like True, who screens its applicants for previous convictions and refuses entry to anyone who has a record. But even then there is no guarantee the person you are chatting with at a dating site isn't a shady character - just like there is no guarantee with a stranger you meet on the street, or even someone you run into after twenty years of no contact.
