A "New" Kind of Dating Story
I'll admit I'm a bit of a geek, in that I have two passions I'm somewhat obsessive about: dating (isn't it obvious?) and narrative nonfiction, which is where a writer tells a story about themselves using the the tools and methods normally used in a fictional story. Fiction hasn't grabbed my attention in the same way though - or at least it hadn't up until I read Diane Kristine's article over at BlogCritics Magazine yesterday.
Story2Oh! is an "experimental narrative" created by Canadian writer Jill Golleck in the face of the U.S. writers' strike and an almost desperate need for new forms of online entertainment. Using social networking sites like Facebook, Story2Oh! tells a tale of dating and relationships through online means. Fictional characters dish on their dates interactively, like many of us would on our own blogs, and move the dating story forward with Web 2.0 bells and whistles and encouragement from readers like myself.
I'm quite interested to see (a) how the story unfolds (because like I said before, I'm a sucker for a well-written, first person dating story), (b) how much readers both choose to interact and need to interact in order for Story2Oh! to be compelling, (c) what type of dating and relationship content is covered (is it superficial girl likes guy stuff, or do the writers touch on more serious dating issues over the course of the programing?) and (d) how many people decide they want to befriend the fictional characters on Facebook - and how many of them are single themselves. I've added myself to their friends' lists. Would you?

This sounds very cool. I heard there is also a gay man out there who wrote about his online dating experiences in a narrative way, though I don’t know the title. I just read a book about a girl who dated 25 guys online (2 years 25 guys, my online dating story)It is fascinating reading about other people’s dating experiences to compare notes.
I’ve been writing a similar story myself, narrating my own personal experiences with the online dating world. It’s good to know there are others out there who not only have a voice, but are using it and getting published to boot. To be frank, I’m a bit surprised there aren’t more already.
Though I haven’t tried to Start Love online yet, I do find it interesting to read about others experiences. Maybe they will help me out someday if I ever decide to try.
