How Does Your Relationship Affect Your Taxes?

Thursday January 31, 2008

I remember as a child being told by my parents that, in order for a couple living together to be considered common-law, they had to live under the same roof together for a decade. Now that memory may be clouded by the twenty-five year stint between now and then but the fact still remains: by moving in together the government may at some point determine that you and your partner are living in a common-law marriage relationship.

Does this mean anything for your upcoming tax return filing? It could mean nothing, depending on where you live. But why leave it to chance? In honor of National Tax Advice Day, H&R Block is offering free "Ask a Tax Advisor" sessions by phone or email until January 31st (today). Why not take advantage of the service and find out how living together may, or may not, affect your taxes.
