Farrelly Brothers Move To TV With Dating Comedy "Unhitched"

Wednesday March 19, 2008

FOX has bundled up all of the angst and frustration thirty-something daters face every day in their new comedy, Unhitched, featuring four singles wandering about trying to find love, or at the very least a date. Each have their own set of issues to deal with: Dr. Freddy Sanghal (Shawn Majumder) hasn't dated since December of 1992 and is completely lost in a sea of options after his recent divorce, Kate (Rashida Jones) is still reeling over her ex who after seven years wouldn't marry her, but proposed to his next girlfriend after several weeks, Tommy (Johnny Sneed) is a no-holds barred playboy with three marriages already behind him, and Jack "Gator" Gately (Craig Bierko) finds fault with every woman but the one who broke his heart and left him for "Guy", an acrobat for Cirque du Soleil.

I've watched three episodes of Unhitched, and I'll say that it definitely has its funny moments - although many scenarios are very over the top a la There's Something About Mary (which the Farrelly Brothers wrote as well). The characters are obviously still finding their groove - which works considering they all know each other through Kate, the lawyer who processed all of the men's divorces and who just happens to live next door to Gator's place, whose living room is the main set for the show.

I find few TV shows that really focus on dating as the main storyline ever since Sex and the City went off the airwaves, so I'm excited to see what Unhitched has to offer in its first season. If you've managed to catch an episode, feel free to comment and tell us what you think.

I wanted to like this show! I love The Office and was excited to see Rashida Jones on a new show. I just haven’t enjoyed it yet! I’ve seen the episodes and the humor just isn’t there yet. Between having to watch a montage of teaching a guy to stop mid-urination to having someone rip off a woman’s large skin tag, it just hasn’t hit me yet. I’m still giving it a try, but it’s really falling short so far…

LHT, I agree with you. I found some moments just priceless and couldn’t stop laughing, but for the most part I felt like the show still hadn’t found it’s gelling space. Yet. Here’s to hoping it finds it’s way somewhere in the first season, because the concept is excellent.
