Harry Potter Star Takes "Spotting Someone From Across the Room" To a Whole New Level

Wednesday April 23, 2008
Daniel Radcliffe

Although I've never thought of celebrities as much more than regular people like you and me (but who get paid a lot more than you or I to do whatever it is they do best), I've always imagined their dating lives to be a bit more glamorous and thrilling than the rest of ours. But perhaps I've mixed up the concepts of presence and charisma with confidence. Because (in my mind) if a celebrity sees an attractive person across a crowded room, it's easy enough to meet said person without a lot of effort.

So I got a bit of a giggle when I read MSNBC's version of Daniel Radcliffe's recent evening out, where Radcliffe described his frustration with trying to find a lovely woman who'd been eyeing him all night across the crowded room:

I must have walked around that party for an hour trying to look for this girl, like some sad pathetic dweeb, but it would have been worth it.

Unfortunately for Radcliffe, who is best known for playing Harry Potter in the movie series by the same name, the mysterious woman wasn't to be found that evening, although he had some help in locating her later on. The Daily Telegraph - the newspaper who ran the original story - started their own search for the woman in the hopes of reuniting the pair. Later on the same day it was reported the woman was found, although the lass in question already has a boyfriend. Still, the two didn't rule out meeting again.

Now most of us would never, ever have a major newspaper actively looking for someone for us ala Craigslist Missed Connections -style. Admittedly, not that long ago someone created a web page just to find a woman he'd fallen in love with on the New York City transit system. The site worked too, but I never did hear if the pair made it past the first date.

I digress. My point is this: how many of us would (or could) do the same thing that Radcliffe did? I don't mean seeing someone from across the room and thinking, "I have to meet that person!" That happens every day. But actually acting on it. Doing something about it. And then making it know to the world that this person made such a huge impression that you'd be willing to discuss the event with with a major news source.

But what do you think? What lengths would/could you go to in order to meet that special someone you locked eyes with from across the room?

Actually, a website exists that helps the mere mortal as well as the celebrity connect with someone who is staring at them from across the room at a party, cafe, restaurant, gym or any other place people congregate. The site is called Youcode.com.

If Daniel and the lass had used Youcode’s Meet Me feature, they would have been able to send messages to each other from their PDA’s right there at the party.

Ok, I’ll bite - although you need the “www” in front of the link for it to work. Both Daniel and the woman he was pursuing were in London at the time - yet the site you mention is only available in the US. I have to assume you are somehow affiliated with the site, so I’ll ask if there are plans to extend the idea outside the US to Canada or overseas in the near future.
