November 2008 Dating and Relationship Book Reviews

Thursday November 6, 2008

Quite a few dating books have been released of late, and I've read and reviewed as many as I can. Here's a list of the most recent, along with my own personal star ratings. Now you too can add your own star ratings and opinions, so feel free to add your own thoughts on each of the books below by clicking on its respective link.

  • Secrets of a Fix Up Fanatic Secrets of a Fix Up Fanatic: Three Stars
Susan Shapiro has written a book based on her own experiences happily matching couples, providing advice to singles on how to be a matchmaker for themselves. I appreciated some of the suggestions Shapiro made in her book, but found her tone a bit off putting. Not recommended for single parents, divorcees, or "dating experts".

  • If You Want Closure In Your Relationship, Start With Your Legs If You Want Closure In Your Relationship Start With Your Legs Review: Zero Stars
The worst dating book to come across my desk in a very long time, it is the first I've ever given zero stars to. Big Boom, bodyguard to the stars and former pickup artist, has attempted to warn women of philandering, dishonest men using his own personal experiences as fodder. The concept is fabulous but the writing, mechanics and structure are atrocious, as are the frequent religious references - which would have been fine had the book been marketed as a Christian dating book.

  • Confessions Of An Online Dating Addict Confessions Of An Online Dating Addict Review: Three Stars
I find it very difficult to review memoirs, only because it feels like I am reviewing one's personal experiences - which are, of course, highly subjective. Confessions Of An Online Dating Addict is such a book, which I found entertaining at times, yet confusing. Potentially fun for those wanting to feel less alone and without a voice in the world of online dating.

  • Hold Me Tight Hold Me Tight: Five Stars
Dr. Johnson has written an engaging, fascinating and extremely useful book for couples in the midst of relationship breakdown, and who aren't able or willing to visit a counselor. A registered therapist herself, Dr. Johnson has taken relations research she's pioneered, and turned it into an accessible book for singles, couples and therapists to use, daily. Highly recommended.

In the area of intercultural dating, Russian-American dating in particular, i would recommend the book of Lynn Visson ‘Wedded Strangers’. Fun to read and helpful in dayly life.

Great round up of books out there!

My go to is “Men Love Bitches”. But it is not for the reason why most people think. When I tell my guy friends that I love this book, they think it is all about teaching women how to play games. I tell them, no it really isn’t. The book “Men Love Bitches” is about women keeping their own identity and life and not dropping everything because a boy has called last minute and wants to see her. For women it is really easy to give up yoga class and meet the boy, even though we know we should not do this! This book reminds us that we exist and have a life separate of our relationship!
