Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival

Thursday September 27, 2007

You may have heard of County Cork's yearly Matchmaker Festival if you've ever watched The Matchmaker (1997, Janeane Garofalo) or have spent any time in Ireland from late August to early October. Dubbed as the "largest festival in Ireland", the Matchmaker Festival brings together singles from all over Europe to dance the weekends away, soak away their cares in the legendary Spa waters, and potentially meet the love of their lives.

The Matchmaking Festival was originally created to marry well-to-do locals with farm hands during the lull each fall when the fields have been harvested and the livestock are full and not in need of extra feedings until later in the season. Today however, the festival has morphed into a six week long party, complete with dancing until 4am every weekend and a 'Mr. Lisdoonvarna' and the 'Queen of the Burren' competition. And although there are only two official matchmakers still left in Lisdoonvarna, they are both ready and on-hand to make matches should anyone attending the festival be looking to marry.

Have you ever attended this festival? Would you? I'd love to talk to people who have, and who are willing to share their experiences with other readers.
