Shagpal Adult Dating Site Review

Note from Bonny: This isn't my typo, this is merely a copy and paste from their main index page. When an adult dating site has glaring errors right up front, you have to wonder how reputable (or fast growing) it is.

To sign up for its adult dating site, Shagpal requires your full name (both first and last), as well as some other standard information (birthday, location, user name, etc.). Strangely, Shagpal also asks users to denote where they are looking for someone (which most sites assume is the same area in which you live). A written dating profile is not required for sign up.

Users are also asked to agree that they've read over the Terms of Service - but the only thing resembling a TOS is the Terms of Use page, and if users do try and read it before submitting their profile, they lose everything they've done. Like with any dating site, be sure to read the fine print before agreeing to a dating site membership.

A quick review of the TOS shows that members must be 18 years of age, which is not the legal age of majority for many states in the U.S. To quote Shagpal:

"ELIGIBILITY: MINORS MAY NOT BECOME MEMBERS. By becoming a Member, You represent and warrant that You are at least 18 years old. "

Which at the very least, is misleading.

Another item to mention in the TOS is that all pictures and profiles become the copyright of Shagpal to use as they see fit. Most adult dating sites either forgo this clause, or allow users to choose whether or not they'd like their likeness to be used in marketing materials (such as Lavalife's Intimate Encounters section). Which may be part of the reason why every single profile I viewed did not have a photo attached.

In order to acurrately review Shagpal, I'd have to be able to sign up. Unfortunately Shagpal's membership confirmation emails never made it through to my inbox after repeated attempts. **UPDATE** I did receive confirmation the next day, several times over, as well as a Gold membership for 6 months ("valued at $79.98") without asking.

This adult dating site seems to offer many of the same features most adult dating sites do: forums, plentiful search options, chat, instant messaging, winks, friends lists, photo galleries, and the ability to ban users from contacting you. There are a couple of unique features such as the event calendars, Google maps (showing where users are located), and backup and restore function (where users can choose any combination of their profile data such as lists, photos and blog postings to backup).

Shagpal also offers user stats for all logged in members to view which although quite fascinating, it showed just how few users there currently are on the system: as of July 25, 2008, 168 people who match my 'gender preferences', 64 who live in my country, and 13 in my time zone. Several different searches failed to show those five people, and I became frustrated after several attempts at trying to find more than five users in my country when the stats showed differently.

I was unable to find a fee structure listed anywhere on the Shagpal site, but after receiving my email confirmation, I was offered a free 6 month pass ("valued at $79.98"). Clicking on the "Upgrade Membership" link in my user panel showed three membership options: Free, Silver and Gold.

Free members are included in search results, upload one photo, and search for members. Silver members also receive chat, winks and event management priviledges, view others' profile pictures, send emails to other users, and upload five photos. Gold members can blog, instant message, save profiles, ban users, create a hot list/friends list, upload video and upload up to 20 photos.
