What Is Courtship?

By Bonny Albo, About.com

Definition:

There may not be a lot of similarities when it comes to the application of courtship, flirting, and mating around the world, but the intention is always the same: to create sexual intimacy between two people, which normally occurs through a complex exchange of verbal and non-verbal communication. Therefore, courtship is the mechanism used by two people to remove both the physical and emotional barriers needed to come together and be recognized as a loving couple.

The root of the word, courtship, derives from an ancient Indo-European term, “gher”, which directly translated means to “grasp or enclose”.
