After the commercial the Pickup Artists are back in the classroom, this time to learn the basics of garnering a woman's attention, specifically "opening", or a "gambit" (a conversation starter). The field test will review how well the participants can open a 'set' (group of people), and the best of the Pickup Artist contestants will win immunity from being eliminated that week.
Then the chairs are moved away and the practical portion of the Pickup Artist teaching begins. Mystery shows that by approaching a woman to the side, you become less threatening and more able to telegraph disinterest - a key in his attraction theory. A man who walks up to a woman facing her directly shows, "too much interest", and will essentially "creep them out". Handouts are then provided with tried and true openers to practice with one another. Spoon moves to another room to meet up with Tara, so he can learn with a live woman instead of with the other guys like everyone else.
After about ten minutes of hemming, hawing and practicing, the Pickup Artist contestants get dressed up in their new avatars (with all of the wrongly created avatars fixed up and looking lovely) and are set loose in a club. Viewers get a birds' eye view of the entire experience, because of hidden cameras and microphones embedded all over the bar.
- Scott starts off the group, but he's so nervous and awkward that he can't even make himself heard over the music in the club. He knows that its a failure almost immediately however, and he leaves the 'set'.
- Brady is the next pickup artist contestant, and opens the set almost immediately and with ease, using the question, "Do you floss before or after you brush?"
- Fred tries to strike up a conversation with a lady, but its obvious from the start that he hasn't memorized his openers. The gal has no idea what he's trying to ask her, so he moves on swiftly.
- Joe approaches a set with both a man and a woman, but seems really "high energy", and therefore comes across as being either on drugs or too invested/interested. Both the gent and the gal he spoke with seemed confused and he left quickly.
- Joe D swaggers into a set with his new avatar (strip club owner/mafioso), looking confident and solid. He opens a five set (five people in the group), and even gets a handshake from one of the gals in the group, with one of the ladies pulling him back to talk some more. A complete success.
- Kosmo deviates from the Pickup Artist set openers immediately, asking girls if they want to see him breakdance. Matador, watching in another room, yells out, "NO!" and the girls Kosmo is talking to seem to feel the same way. Still, he breakdances in the middle of the club, and it flops. Kosmo, however, is very proud of himself because he actually made contact with someone, unlike in episode one where he wasn't able to open his mouth.
- Purdeep tries a situational opener (Did you see that guy breakdancing?) and has nowhere to go with his question, as "it doesn't engage the group", according to Mystery. The woman he is speaking with opens her phone to make a call right in the middle of a sentence, so Purdeep wisely walks away.
- Spoon is up next, visibly nervous. He walks around aimlessly, panics, and leaves the club, making a beeline for Mystery's secret booth to talk about how fearful he is. After a surprisingly great peptalk, Spoon goes back into the club to try again -- and he does, with a three set, having a short but decent conversation. Still, Spoon is uncomfortable, and discusses the possibility of going home and ending his Pickup Artist journey early.
So who won the field test? Joe D, who obviously excelled over all of the other Pickup Artist contestants. This made him safe from elimination, and also gave him the opportunity to choose two wingmen, who also receive immunity.
In the final scene, Mystery explained the medallions that each continuing Pickup Artist contestant will receive as he moves through the process. This week, its a white medallion with the symbol of Bercanon on it, representing birth, life and growth.
One by one the seven Pickup Artist medallions are given out, starting first with three immune gentleman: Joe D (winner), Brady (wingman) and Kosmo (wingman). Each of the guys receive some tips and suggestions to improve their game, leaving Spoon and Fred behind. Shockingly, Spoon decides to leave the Pickup Artist contest, and seven guys remain.
