Where and How We Met

A mutual friend that I knew from college and she knew from grad school invited the two of us along with another friend to hang out and see the third Matrix movie after they were done with classes one day. We met for the first time at one of the big entrances to the subway in Times Square in the middle of a pouring rainstorm.

How We Fell In Love

Although we became friendly after that first meeting, we didn't really talk until a few months later, when I went to Chicago to visit friends for two weeks. I was telecommuting at the time, so I had to work during the day, and I had gotten her IM screen name from our mutual friend. She was at home most of the day, so we spent hours and hours online every day, getting to know each other. At the end of the two weeks, I suggested we go on a date the day I came back. Soon we were spending several days a week together and by the end of the spring we were head over heels. A year later we moved in together; two years later we were married.

Advice

  • Look for someone you can really talk to about pretty much anything. That kind of mutual support and communication becomes really important as you encounter challenges in your lives and your relationship.
  • Complimentary viewpoints or interests can sometimes be better than being the exact same. I've grown a great deal as a person just from having someone who doesn't see the world as I do by my side.
  • Be able to have fun together. No matter what happens, if you can make each other laugh, you'll be ok.
